"The system tries to guide traffic away from places where particulate and NO2 concentrations are too high," says Andrea Ghio, a product manager for environmentally sensitive control systems at Siemens Infrastructures and Cities. It does this, for example, by turning all the traffic lights green on thoroughfares in threatened areas.
